Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS)

Founded in 1985 by Ugandan authors, primarily musicians, the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS) was established to advance copyright administration in Uganda. It is registered with the Registrar of Companies as a Company Limited by Guarantee, meaning it has no share capital and belongs collectively to all its members.

Recognized by the Government of Uganda as a Collecting Society, UPRS is also a member of the Confederation of International Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). Through reciprocal agreements with other copyright societies worldwide, UPRS ensures that:

  • Foreign and local copyrighted works within its repertoire are protected in Uganda.
  • Ugandan works are safeguarded internationally through partner societies.

Currently, UPRS represents the rights of over 4,000 members across Uganda. It licenses organizations to perform or play copyrighted music on behalf of its members and international affiliates, ensuring royalties are fairly collected and distributed.

By not being a member of UPRS, artists risk losing substantial earnings, as royalties collected globally cannot be remitted to non-members. UPRS actively promotes and protects copyright value while representing all genres of music, ensuring that creators receive fair compensation for their work.
